# How to send wedding invitations on WhatsApp

_Updated 2026-10-30_

**The short answer.** Send each guest their own message, from your own number, with a link to an invitation they can answer. Skip the group chat, which shows every guest everyone else's number, and the broadcast list, which only reaches people who have saved yours. A personal link per guest is what lets you see who has opened it and who has replied to each event.

## Is it OK to send wedding invitations on WhatsApp?

Yes. For a lot of families it is now the normal way, and for guests spread across the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, the US and beyond it is the one app everybody already has open. A message from you lands where your guests actually read things, and a link opens a full invitation with the dates, the venues, the dress code and a way to reply.

What makes it feel like an invitation rather than a forward is that it is addressed to them. Use their name, send it from your own phone, and give them something to open. A flyer dropped into a family group reads as an announcement; a message that says *Hi Auntie Bisi* reads as an invitation.

> **Tip:** Some elders still like something to hold. Print a handful of cards for the people who will treasure one, and send everyone else theirs on WhatsApp. Nobody minds getting both.

## Group chat, broadcast list or one at a time?

WhatsApp gives you three ways to reach a lot of people. Only one of them works well for invitations.

| | Group chat | Broadcast list | One at a time, with a link |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Who sees the guest list | Members can see each other's numbers | Nobody | Nobody |
| Who it reaches | Everyone you add | Only people who saved your number | Everyone you send to |
| How many | Up to 1,024 | Up to 256 a list | No limit |
| Replies | In one busy thread | Private, but you track them by hand | Counted for you, event by event |
| Feels like | An announcement | The same words sent to everyone | An invitation |

A group chat also invites the reply-all you didn't want: three hundred people congratulating you, in one thread, for a fortnight. A broadcast list arrives as a private message, but a guest who hasn't saved your number simply never receives it, which is easy to miss, and in some countries WhatsApp has started capping how many broadcasts you can send a month.

Sending one at a time sounds slow, but it isn't if the message is already written for you. With a personal link in each message, the replies arrive on your list rather than in your chats.

## What to write in the message

Keep it short: greet them by name, say whose wedding it is, and end with their link. The invitation behind the link carries the detail.

**As Our Guest List sends it**

> Hi Tunde! You're invited to the wedding of Abi & Tobi. View your invite & RSVP here: [link]

**For family, a little warmer**

> Hi Auntie Ngozi, it would mean so much to have you with us. You're invited to the wedding of Abi & Tobi, from the traditional wedding on Friday to the reception on Saturday. Everything is here, and you can reply for the whole family: [link]

## How to send them with Our Guest List

Our Guest List writes each guest's message for you, with their name and their own link, and opens WhatsApp ready to send. You press send in WhatsApp, so every invitation goes from your number, one at a time.

1. **Start your celebration.** Press Start for free, make your account, then type whose wedding it is. Add each event, for example the traditional wedding, the church and the reception, with its date and venue.
2. **Choose how it looks.** Pick an invitation design, an envelope and a wax seal colour. Guests see the invitation in the chat, and the envelope opens when they tap their link.
3. **Add your guests.** Paste your list from a spreadsheet, open your phone's contacts, or type them in. Couples and families go on one invitation.
4. **Tick their events.** For each guest, choose which events they are invited to. They only ever see those.
5. **Send.** On the Guests step, press Start sending, then Open WhatsApp. The message is written; press send in WhatsApp, come back and press I sent it. The next guest is ready.
6. **Watch the replies.** Each guest answers each event, and your list shows who is coming, who can't and who hasn't replied yet.

Not sure when to start? Invitations usually go eight to twelve weeks before the day; [when to send wedding invitations](/guides/when-to-send-wedding-invitations) has the whole timeline.

## How to avoid your WhatsApp number being banned

WhatsApp acts against accounts that send large numbers of unwanted messages, and what usually triggers it is people blocking or reporting the sender. Invitations to your own family and friends are the ordinary use WhatsApp is built for, and a few habits keep it that way:

- **Send from your own phone, one at a time**, rather than through a bulk-sending service.
- **Say who you are in the first line** to anyone who may not have your number saved, so the message is not mistaken for spam.
- **Spread a very long list over a few sittings** rather than sending hundreds in an hour.
- **Don't add people to a group** they didn't ask to join.

## Guests who aren't on WhatsApp

Every guest can get the same invitation another way, and their reply lands on the same list:

- **iMessage**, for anyone with an iPhone. The link goes on its own, so iMessage draws the invitation as the whole message.
- **Email**, for anyone you have an address for. Our Guest List sends these from its own address, all in one press.
- **Any other app or a text.** Copy their link and paste it wherever they read things.
- **Paper**, for the elders who would rather hold a card. When they answer by phone or in person, press Record a reply on their row and add it yourself.

## Questions people ask

### Can I send all my WhatsApp invitations at once?

Not on WhatsApp, and that is a good thing. A message sent to hundreds of people in one go is either a group, which shares everyone's number, or a broadcast list, which skips anyone who hasn't saved yours. On Our Guest List each WhatsApp message is already written, so it is a tap and a send per guest. Guests you have an email address for can be sent theirs by email, all in one press.

### Do guests need an app or an account to reply?

No. The link opens in their browser. They see their invitation, tap to reply for each event, and can come back to change their answer.

### Can I change the details after sending?

Yes. Each guest's link always shows your latest version, so a moved time or a new venue reaches everyone the next time they open it. You can also post an update that appears at the top of every invitation.

## Send yours with Our Guest List

Each guest gets their own invitation on WhatsApp or iMessage and answers every event separately. [Create your free wedding invitation](https://ourguestlist.co.uk/start). Your first 50 guests are free. No payment details needed.
